Outreach Events

Get involved in our community activities!

Expand Your Horizons

Winter or Spring 2022

The Expanding Your Horizons Conference is an all-day annual STEM conference for girls in grades 6-10. Its goal is to increase the girls’ interest in STEM careers by providing exciting and engaging hands-on experiences. EYH is typically SWIGS’s largest outreach event, and we are always looking for volunteers! We host two separate workshops: Molecular Gastronomy and Chemistry Magic Show.

Comienza con un Sueño

Spring 2022

Comienza con un Sueño, “It Begins with a Dream” is a STEM fair hosted by UCSD each year. It is a bilingual event and an opportunity for middle and high school students from historically underrepresented backgrounds to learn about STEM and higher education. For this event, we set up a few demonstrations where students can see, touch, and smell the chemistry happening around them!

August 6, 2021

Ecologik connects the next generation of scientists to the natural resources and science at Cabrillo National Monument. This event seeks to provide education tools and foster a learning environment where technology is more accessible to students while inspiring them to choose careers in STEM. We normally set up a demo for students to learn more about chemistry in a fun and interactive way!

Chem Expo

Tentatively Fall 2021

The ChemExpo is a National Chemistry Week event hosted by ACS in San Diego to illustrate how chemistry is present in our everyday lives. Here, we set up a “smells table” for high school and middle school students to learn about the chemical compounds responsible for the smell/aroma of food or household items. Students love to try and guess the item that they may be smelling!
